Charm Bracelet started as an idea, a basic concept. The idea acted as a structure, a guideline I could depend on but at times deviate from. I approach my materials as an amature, working with them not in their intended way but in a language which made sense to me. Using unfamiliar materials creates a curiosity which in turn opens the door to experimentation. This amateur approach forces me to give up on visual expectations and follow my intuition. It allows me to trust. Trust my hands to make it, trust the materials will push me and trust I’ll push them. It is the process of figuring something out while you do it. It is not so much the result I’m interested in but the challenge of how I’m going to make the work. How will these links need to be made in order to create a chain? If I wind cloth over chicken wire, what is going to hold it into place? Some of the materials I worked with came from the hardware store, some I got for free, some I found. Concrete, chain, chicken wire, foam pipe insulation, they all have a function, a use, but with this work they are abstracted from their intended use to create an object, a Charm Bracelet.
