Project SOUL

See it On Campus: Level 2
Visitor InfoRomanticize furniture by transforming contemporary material to recreate traditional patterns.

I’ve spent 8 years away from home
I immerse myself in the western culture
I drifted away.
Who am I? Where is my SOUL?
I re-learn my Vietnamese culture
I learn craftsmanship, tradition
I learn patterns, symbols, materials

Patterns can be tangible
Exert sensorial feelings
Pattern, as a visual artifact and a vestige of culture
An expression, an experience.

THE MAKING
Patterning with plywood, undervalued, industrial, contemporary.
Cut, laminate, clamp,
cut, laminate, clamp.
How to pattern with plywood:

Plywood of any size
Cut into 1″ strips
1″ strip for lamination

Turn strips onto the end-grain side
Laminate sideways
Cut 1″ strips at a 60-degree angle
Lamination result

I reinterpret patterning on furniture
Armoire holds stories & pieces of identity
Meaningful & ageless
