Kyla Gilbert is a visual artist based out of Vancouver BC on the unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. She graduated with a BFA in performance from Concordia University in 2017 and spent the two subsequent years touring as a puppeteer with DJ Kid Koala. Her current practice is motivated by an interest in built environments, the ways in which directed movement is taken for granted, and how there can be breaks and slippages in the intended use of architectural spaces. Her physical explorations are based around assemblages of deconstructed everyday objects (office furniture, household items etc.) combined with industrial materials (steel, concrete, glass, wood). Through modifying and combining disparate materials, she’s striving to create relationships based on contradiction that contain moments of fragility, lightness, and expansion. Kyla completed my MFA in Studio Art from Emily Carr University in spring of 2022.
